Young Dancer's Journey
At just 14 years old, Mikaela Martin is no stranger to the stage. This is her second time performing in the beloved "The Nutcracker." As she takes on the role of a hummingbird, it's clear that her love for ballet shines through. "It's a little bit stressful, but it's like a way of having fun in dance, doing what you love," she shares. Maybe she'll inspire the next generation of dancers, as she sees the joy on the faces of the little girls. The Community's Involvement
Southwest Virginia Ballet's 33rd production of "The Nutcracker" features a remarkable cast of about 120 members. Many come from the community, bringing a diverse range of backgrounds. From the six-year-old with dreams of becoming a ballerina to those in their 70s and beyond, it's a beautiful sight. As Mikaela says, "It's fun to be around such a beautiful community, and it's fun to get to know other people from Roanoke." Pedro Szalay, the artistic director, is grateful for the many volunteers who work behind the scenes, ensuring the arts thrive in the Roanoke Valley. The Life Skills Taught
The arts, according to Szalay, offer valuable life skills. "It's given them self-esteem, inspires them and really believe in themselves. And it's managing their time, because some of these kids, as you say, they're going to school and they're going afterwards to their ballet classes, plus they do sports or they do music." These lessons extend beyond the dance floor and into their daily lives.Performance Details
